'High End. VIP. Exclusive'

I've been buying and using makeup for many years now, but until recently I've always avoided more high end products. I think it's mostly because my allowance wouldn't cover for it, and if I could get a cheaper version of something I always would. However I did always used to trawl the MAC website to look at what I'd get if I ever did get anything. The eyeshadow in 'Woodwinked' was always something I looked at, and I think I even put it in my cart a few times, but I never went through with it.

A month or so ago, though, my dad went on a business trip to America, and he asked me if I wanted him to get me anything. I knew that lots of brands like MAC and Benefit are actually a lot cheaper in the states, so I asked him if he could get me some makeup. I then did some extensive research to decide what I actually wanted.

Lots of my friends have MAC lipsticks and said they were the best value for money, as they last a very long time and are excellent quality. I had a look at what various bloggers I follow wear, and I settled on Russian Red, obviously a MAC classic. I also saw a post by one of my favourite bloggers Keiko Lynn, which was about her favourite lipsticks. One of them was a gorgeous dusky rose pink in the pro longwear collection called Unlimited. As i'm a big fan of any pink that can be described as 'dusky', I decided this would be a lovely everyday colour to get.

I also asked him for the two Benefit mascaras I've always coveted; Bad gal Lash and They're Real. I love a good mascara, and while these are usually a little pricey for a mascara that only lasts for two or three months, they were a lot cheaper to buy in America.

After using all of these I realised I'd maybe always been a little too cautious when it comes to high end makeup. While I certainly don't really need to spend any more money, I realised it might be worth investing in more staple items so that I don't keep buying the cheaper versions that don't have as good an effect. I decided the next thing I should get should probably be a really good foundation that is actually my skintone.

I've always had problems with this, as I am quite pale. However my skin tone is quite warm, which was a problem when it came to drugstore foundations as the paler tones are usually a lot cooler, or just strange pink tinted shades. Also the consistencies are often quite thick, which might work for some, but as I have freckles and don't really want to cover them up, I prefer lighter coverage.

So one day I decided to have a look in my local Debenhams and find, once and for all, my perfect foundation. I tried plenty, but the one that worked the best was this Clinique Superbalanced foundation in Alabaster, the lightest shade they have. I had to buy a pump for it as I wasn't really a fan of the way foundation was dispensed from the original bottle, but I've used it most days and it is absolutely my perfect foundation.

I also needed a proper face sun cream, as my face always tends to react badly to having actual sun cream on it, as well as any SPF moisturisers. I decided to try out this Soap And Glory one, which was pretty expensive just for the tiny bottle but is SPF 50 and a little goes a long way. Again, I've used it most days since buying it, and my skin hasn't reacted which is fantastic. I would highly recommend this if you have sensitive skin, as it's a lot gentler and lighter than normal sun cream, and actually the small bottle is useful as it can be carried around all the time.

Finally the other day I popped into Jarrold, as one of my friends is about to start working there and me and my other friend Bee wanted to see where she'd be working. However, we got a little distracted by the MAC counter, and both ended up buying a lipstick. I bought the Retro Matte lipstick in All Fired Up, which is an absolutely gorgeous colour, a bright raspberry pink.

Next post I'll show you all the lipsticks properly, but until then I'm glad I did decide to branch out into some more high end products. I'll still always buy cheaper makeup, especially when trying out new colours and looks, but it's also nice to have things that are a little special.
